Where Does Your Creative Harvest Contribution Go?
The Creative Harvest Edible Gardens Festival is a vibrant celebration hosted by the Baw Baw Sustainability Network (BBSN); a not-for-profit organisation established in 2007. This event is the key fundraiser that supports BBSN’s initiatives and helps continue their work in the Gippsland Community.
Bridging the gap between talk and action on sustainable living
Every year, Creative Harvest brings the community together to explore the joys of home food gardening by hosting an open edible garden festival of 12 private veggie patches in the Baw Baw Shire of West Gippsland. But what many may not know is that all funds raised by Creative Harvest directly support BBSN's vital initiatives focused on three key areas:
Energy Efficiency: BBSN believes everyone should live in a comfortable, energy-efficient home. BBSN empowers residents and small businesses to reduce energy consumption through their Home Energy Assessment service and remediation programs. This not only saves money but also improves the living standards of low-income families. Their recently launched Home Energy Doctor program provides personalised and affordable plans to help people live more comfortably and sustainably.
Combating Climate Change: BBSN is a strong advocate for climate action. They recognise the urgency of the climate crisis and the role human activity plays, particularly fossil fuel dependence. BBSN actively supports the United Nations IPCC's climate goals and promotes policies to avert climate disaster. They are also dedicated to UN Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. By running informational talks and events throughout the year, BBSN encourages the community to participate in achieving this vision. In 2025, BBSN will host Associate Professor Jess Reeves and Associate Professor Peter Christoff, amongst others, who will give presentations that will enable and empower the community to adapt to a changing climate.
Sustainable Living: By showcasing environmentally friendly practices in areas like renewable energy, housing, food production, and transportation, BBSN inspires the community to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. They also advocate for businesses and governments to prioritise environmental considerations and integrate sustainability into their operations. For example, BBSN runs a biennial Electric Vehicle Expo and participates in Sustainable House Day.
Beyond Creative Harvest
In addition to the annual festival, BBSN offers a range of year-round events:
Monthly Events: Every last Thursday of the month, BBSN hosts public events to engage the community on various sustainability topics. Visit here to out more.
Weekly Gardening Group: For those passionate about home gardening, BBSN provides a dedicated weekly group for members to connect, share knowledge, and learn from each other.
A Hub for Sustainability: Most importantly, BBSN fosters a welcoming space for like-minded individuals to socialise, discuss ideas, collaborate on projects, and take action towards a more sustainable future.
By participating in Creative Harvest, you're not just enjoying a fun and educational festival; you're directly contributing to BBSN's important work in building a more sustainable Baw Baw region.
Members receive discounts on information nights and the ability to participate in the organisation's running. Individual membership is only $25 and family membership $45 per year.
