Summer is almost here and we are eagerly awaiting one of the most exciting times in the garden.

Kristy Plumridge of Green Hills Farm, which is open during the Creative Harvest Edible Garden Festival, joined Prue Bentley on ABC Statewide Drive Program to talk all about eggplants.

Prue is a self-declared 'novice' and was looking for tips to help her grow an edible garden - specifically what to do with her new batch of heirloom eggplant seedlings.

Kristy shared her top five tips for getting the most out of growing delicious eggplants:

1. Sun, Sun, Sun: Eggplants thrive in full sun, so choose a spot in your garden that gets at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

2. Rich Soil: Before planting, incorporate plenty of organic matter like compost.

3. Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during hot, dry weather.

4. Mulching: Layer mulch around the base of your eggplants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds

5. Cool Climate Tip: If you live in a cooler climate like West Gippsland, start your seedlings in a greenhouse and wait a little longer before planting outdoors for more constant warmer weather and warmer soil.
