4 top tips for enjoying a healthy, plentiful crop of heirloom tomatoes:
Shake things up. If you have lots of flowers but few tomatoes, don't blame the bees.
Tomatoes are mostly wind-pollinated, so give your plant a gentle shake.
Ripen them inside. Once the fruit starts to change colour, feel free to let them finish ripening in the bird-free safety of your kitchen. They'll ripen just as well as inside as on the plant.
Keep the flowers coming. Sprinkle a handful of potash around each plant.
Bin the bad bits. Keep your eyes peeled for diseased or dying lower leaves. Remove and bin them to prevent problems from spreading.
